Electric Plenum Heating

Electric plenum heaters turn your existing fossil fuel furnace into a dual-fuel heating system. You are able to use the most efficient heating source - fossil fuel or electricity - at any time.

An electric plenum is one of the most common off-peak electric heating systems available today.

Easily convert your existing natural gas, LP or oil furnace into a "dual-fuel" (electric/gas-oil) system.  Having this ability to use lower cost electric rates when connected to Roseau Electric's load management program allows you to use the most cost effective heating source available and can save you hundreds of dollars off your heating bills each year.

A plenum heater uses your existing furnace fan to move air across the plenum heater elements to heat your home. Both your fossil fuel furnace and the electric plenum heater utilize the same thermostat and duct work.
  • Save money by adding electric heat to your existing gas or oil furnace.
  • Increase the efficiency and comfort of your heat pump system.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Air-source heat pumps work just like a central air conditioner in the summer. In the spring and fall, they provide super-efficient supplemental heat.

Today's air-source heat pumps combine ultra-reliable heating and cooling with unbeatable operating efficiency. In the winter, an ASHP will keep your home warm and comfortable; in the hot, muggy summertime, they work just like a central air conditioner, keeping you cool, humidity-free and comfortable. In the fall and spring, they provide super-efficient supplemental heat.

Unlike a furnace, an air-source heat pump doesn’t burn fuel to make heat. It simply uses electricity to move heat from one place to another. Think of an air-source heat pump as a heat transporter constantly moving warm air from one place to another, to where it’s needed or not needed, depending on the season. Even cold air contains some heat. When it’s cold outside a heat pump extracts this outside heat and transfers it inside. When it’s warm outside, it reverses direction and acts like an air conditioner, removing heat from your home.

BENEFITS
  • A single system cools your home in the summer and provides supplemental heat in the fall and spring months.
  • Delivers up to three times more energy than the electricity it consumes, making it one of the most efficient products on the market.
  • Can be easily installed to use your home's existing ductwork to both heat and cool.
  • A ductless mini-split heat pump option is available for homes without an existing ducted system or when adding ductwork may be impractical or too expensive.

Steffes Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) room heating units provide clean, consistent heat for rooms of nearly any size. The  2100 Series room units are ideal for retrofitting electric baseboard-heated rooms, supplementing an existing heating system or heating a new addition to your home or business. Unlike traditional electric heaters, Steffes ETS room heating units convert electricity to heat during off-peak hours, when the demand and price of electricity is lower.

Specially-designed ceramic bricks within the units store vast amounts of heat for extended periods of time so you can save money without having to shiver. With the built-in room thermostat, you can adjust the heater’s temperature settings for clean, consistent heat that meets your comfort requirements.
STEFFES COMFORT PLUS FORCED-AIR FURNACES
A furnace made with comfort

The Steffes Comfort Plus Forced Air Furnaces (4100 Series) are ducted heating systems designed to stand alone or work in conjunction with a heat pump for increased efficiency. The Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) technology allows the Comfort Plus Forced-Air Furnace to convert electricity to heat during off-peak hours, when the demand for and price of electricity is low.

Specially-designed ceramic bricks within the units store vast amounts of heat for extended periods of time. With this stored off-peak heat, the Steffes Comfort Plus Forced-Air Furnace can deliver clean, consistent comfort 24 hours a day. In addition, by only consuming electricity during off-peak hours, the Comfort Plus can save you up to 70% on your electric bill compared to traditional heating systems. All Steffes Comfort Plus Forced-Air Furnaces are equipped with a variable speed blower to ensure consistent, even temperature output to meet your comfort requirements.

For even greater efficiency, all Steffes Comfort Plus Forced-Air Furnaces can be interfaced to a heat pump system.
STEFFES COMFORT PLUS HYDRONIC FURNACES
A furnace made with comfort

The Steffes Comfort Plus Hydronic Furnaces (5100 Series) blends hydronic heating with Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) technology. During off-peak hours, when electricity costs and energy usage rates are low, the Steffes Hydronic Furnace converts electricity into heat and stores it in specially-designed ceramic bricks located inside the unit.

Through the use of a heat exchanger, this stored heat is transferred as needed from the storage media to a water or glyco solution, which is circulated to areas where the heat is needed. With its ETS technology, the Steffes Hydronic Furnace can substantially lower electricity costs while delivering the high-quality radiant heating associated with traditional hydronic systems. The Steffes Comfort Plus Hydronic Furnace is perfect for radiant floor systems, baseboard radiation or even forced-air systems.

And all Comfort Plus furnaces can be equipped with a heat pump system for even greater efficiency!

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal Heating

Geothermal heat pumps provide the highest efficiency for space heating and cooling available today. The system transfers heat to and from the earth using only small amounts of electricity.

A geothermal heating and cooling system — also known as a ground-source heat pump — has by far the highest efficiency for the combination of space heating and cooling of any other system on the market today. The reason for this efficiency advantage is simple: Geothermal systems do not consume fuel to produce heat. Instead, they capture some of the virtually limitless heat constantly available a few feet below the surface of the earth.

The typical geothermal system consists of a closed loop of special plastic tubing installed underground and an electrically powered compressor inside the home or other structure to be heated. An environmentally friendly, biodegradable antifreeze solution is circulated through the tubing.

BENEFITS
  • A single system cleanly heats and cools your home at unmatched efficiency levels.
  • Because they use fewer mechanical components, and because those components are sheltered from the elements, geothermal heat pumps are durable and highly reliable.
  • Geothermal heat pumps use no outside condensing units, so there’s no noise or humming to bother either you or your neighbors.
  • For water heating, you can add a desuperheater to a geothermal system. A desuperheater is a small heat exchanger that takes heat from the unit's compressor to warm water. This hot water then circulates through a pipe to the home's storage water heater tank.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is a popular off-peak option because the system transfers consistently across the floor to reach people and objects, providing both comfort and efficiency.

Whether it is electric cable or hydronic tubing – underfloor heating offers efficient heat when installed properly and designed for the off-peak electric heating rate. In new construction projects, underfloor heating elements are buried in a sand bed beneath the concrete slab. The sand and slab serve as storage agents when warmed, emitting heat into the room. Underfloor heating can also be mounted below the floor of an existing wood construction in most cases.

HYDRONIC UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Used in conjunction with an electric boiler, hydronic floor heating is a system of circulating heated water through flexible piping.

ELECTRIC CABLE OR MATS

Electric cables or mats heat up when electric current is applied. The systems are buried 8 to 12 inches deep in a bed of sand under the concrete slab, which serves as a heat storage reservoir.

BENEFITS
  • An underfloor storage system can heat an entire building or may be used to supplement another heat source.
  • Place your furniture wherever you choose. No vents get in the way.
  • The system is among the most clean and quiet on the market.
  • Allows you to receive the off-peak heating rate, which is about half of the standard electric rate.
